Meeting Dwight Gooden: A Rookie Card Memory I’ll Never Forget

There are certain cards in my collection that mean more than just book value. My 1985 Donruss Dwight Gooden rookie card is one of them.

Growing up a die-hard Mets fan in the 1980s, Doc was must-see TV. His electric fastball, that knee-buckling curve, and the swagger on the mound made him larger than life to a kid like me. I still remember the first Mets game my father ever took me to in the early 80s — Gooden was on the mound, pitching against Steve Carlton. For a young baseball fan, it didn’t get much bigger than that.

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to meet Dwight Gooden at a local sports bar signing. I brought my 1985 Donruss rookie card with me — the very same card that fueled my childhood Mets memories. When he signed it, it felt like that 10-year-old kid in me was standing right there again.

What made meeting Dwight even more special was the conversation. He was genuinely a pleasure to meet. We talked about his tenure with the Mets and those dominant seasons.
