Why 1985 Topps Will Always Feel Special

By 1985, collecting baseball cards wasn’t just a hobby for me — it was part of who I was. And 1985 Topps will always hold a special place in my heart.

There was something about that bold, colorful design and the iconic rookie cards, such as Mark McGwire, Kirby Puckett, Roger Clemens, and Eric Davis, that made the set unforgettable. Every pack felt like it held something important. My friends and I went crazy collecting and trading this set.

The Excitement Around the Rookies

Even as a kid, you could feel that certain players were different. When I first saw the rookie card of Mark McGwire, it felt like I was holding the future of baseball in my hand. McGwire was my favorite player during this time.

Whether it was stars, rookies, or team leaders, 1985 Topps felt loaded.

Summer Collecting at Its Best

I remember spending entire afternoons organizing stacks of 1985 Topps cards, checking off numbers, and trading duplicates with friends. Completing the set became a mission.

There were no price guides on my desk. Just checklists and determination. Speaking of checklists, it was this year, that I realized I was no longer a kid, and should stop writing on them to check off cards.

Why It Still Matters

Today, 1985 Topps is remembered for its legendary rookies. But for me, it’s remembered for summer afternoons, excitement, and the feeling that the hobby was growing right alongside me. Looking at my Mark McGwire and Kirby Puckett rookie cards today still bring the same excitement they did as when I got them in back back then.
