The Day I First Opened 1988 Topps
By 1988, collecting felt second nature. I knew what I liked. I knew what I was chasing. And I was excited to see what each new release would look like. Not just this year, but every year.
When I first opened a pack of 1988 Topps, I remember thinking how clean and simple the design felt. A this pint, I was buying cards by the box, not just packs. My friends and I were doing our first box breaks together.

A Growing Collection
By this point, my collection was growing quickly. Binders were filling up. Boxes were stacking higher. 1988 Topps added the Tom Glavine rookie card and many other stars and hall of famers worth chasing. My personal favorite card in this set is card #580, Mark McGwire. I love the pose of Big Mac on this card, and the gold rookie cup. Great card!
There’s something satisfying about watching a collection expand year after year.
The Final Card to Complete My Set
Card #452, Willie Wilson of the Kansas City Royals.
The Players and the Memories
Every card wasn’t just a stat line — it was a snapshot of a season. A moment in time. Moments I still cherish when I take out this set to look at and show friends and family.
1988 Topps may not be the most valuable set today, but for me, it captures a specific chapter in my collecting story.
